Navigating careers and funding in clinical academia event

Are you an early career biomedical or health researcher interested in a career in clinical academia? Want to know more about funding and development opportunities available to you?

The Academy of Medical Sciences is hosting an online event on Tuesday 25 March 2025 to hear from clinical academics from different career stages, specialities and backgrounds, alongside representatives from funders.

The event will consist of a series of talks providing insight into:

  • Career progression
  • Sustainability in clinical research and practice
  • Funding and collaboration opportunities available to aspiring clinical academics

The speakers will include:

  • Chair: Professor Mary Renfrew OBE FRSE FMedSci, University of Dundee, researcher and leader in the fields of maternal and new-born care and midwifery
  • Professor Julia Sanders, Cardiff University, Registered Midwife and Nurse and researcher with interests in maternity care and early years
  • Dr Katie Mckinnon, St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, neonatal subspeciality trainee with research interests in neonatal neurodevelopment and health inequalities
  • Dr Emily Wheater, Research Manager at Wellcome
  • Dr James Fenton, Assistant Director of Academy Programmes at the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR)
  • Dr Kieran Lee, Senior Programme Manager of Academy Programmes at the NIHR

The Academy of Medical Sciences use the term "clinical academics" to encompass medical and health professionals and early career researchers with clinical backgrounds in medicine, nursing, midwifery, dentistry, veterinary sciences, physiotherapy, radiography, or any other clinical profession.
